水Water

Definition

Water is the compound of hydrogen and oxygen with the formula H₂O and a bent molecular shape. At ordinary temperature and pressure it is a colourless, odourless liquid, the most common solvent on Earth, and essential to life.

Structure and bonding

Oxygen carries two lone pairs and two O–H bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement; the H–O–H angle is 104.5° and the O–H bond 95.8 pm. Oxygen's high electronegativity gives a dipole moment of 1.85 D. Each molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds, which makes water's boiling point, heat capacity and surface tension unusually high and makes ice less dense than the liquid.

Discovering its composition

Ancient thinkers regarded water as an element. In 1781 Cavendish found that burning hydrogen produces water, and in 1783 Lavoisier used this to show water is made of hydrogen and oxygen, naming the flammable gas hydrogène, the water-former. In 1800 Nicholson and Carlisle electrolysed water with a voltaic pile and collected hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 volume ratio.

As solvent and reactant

With a dielectric constant near 80, water dissolves many ionic compounds and polar molecules. It self-ionises, 2 H₂O ⇌ H₃O⁺ + OH⁻, with Kw = 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ at 25 °C. It can act as acid or base, so it is amphoteric, and it takes part in hydrolysis, hydration and many other reactions.

Chemical properties

Amphoteric: it both donates and accepts protons, 2 H₂O ⇌ H₃O⁺ + OH⁻.

Releases hydrogen with active metals and metal hydrides: CaH₂ + 2 H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + 2 H₂↑.

Hydrolyses salts, esters and amides; turns anhydrous CuSO₄ into blue CuSO₄·5H₂O, a test for water.
