含义Meaning
The mass of an atom relative to 1/12 of the mass of a ¹²C atom; dimensionless.
Symbols
Unit |
|---|---|---|
| \(m(\mathrm{X})\) | 一个 X 原子的平均质量average mass of one X atom | kg |
| \(m(^{12}\mathrm{C})\) | 一个碳-12 原子的质量mass of one carbon-12 atom | 1.9926×10⁻²⁶ kg |
| \(x_i\) | 同位素 i 的丰度(摩尔分数)abundance (mole fraction) of isotope i | 1 |
推导Derivation
Atomic masses (~\(10^{-26}\) kg) are inconvenient, so we compare with a standard.
Since 1961 the standard is 1/12 of ¹²C: \(1\,\mathrm{u} = 1.66054\times10^{-27}\) kg.
Elements are isotope mixtures, so the elemental value is the abundance-weighted average.
\[A_r(\mathrm{Cl}) = 0.7576\times 34.969 + 0.2424\times 36.966 \approx 35.45\]
Assumptions & limitations
Natural abundances vary with source; IUPAC gives intervals for H, C, O, etc. and conventional values for everyday use.
Radioactive elements have no fixed abundance; tables give the mass number of the longest-lived isotope in brackets.
