Mass defect

拼音Pinyin zhì liàng kuī sǔn 别名Also mass deficit

定义Definition

Mass defect is the difference between the total mass of the protons and neutrons that make up a nucleus and the actual mass of that nucleus. Through Einstein's relation E = Δmc², it corresponds to the nucleus's binding energy; in a nuclear reaction the mass difference between reactants and products corresponds to the energy released or absorbed.

原理Principle

When nucleons bind into a nucleus they release energy, so the system's energy and, by E = mc², its mass both decrease. Calculations usually use atomic masses including electrons, which cancel on both sides. In uranium-235 fission the products weigh about 0.2 u less than the reactants: roughly 0.09% of the mass becomes about 200 MeV. Chemical reactions change mass too, but only by about one part in 10¹⁰, too little to measure directly.

由来Origin

Einstein derived mass–energy equivalence in special relativity in 1905. From 1919 Aston measured isotope masses precisely with his mass spectrograph, formulated the whole-number rule and found small deviations from whole numbers, which he expressed as the packing fraction; he received the 1922 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 1932 Cockcroft and Walton split lithium nuclei with an accelerator, the first experimental check of mass–energy equivalence in a nuclear reaction.

Related terms

Mass defect is sometimes also used for the difference between an atomic mass and its mass number; in nuclear data tables that quantity is properly called the mass excess, given in keV or MeV, and is zero for ¹²C by definition. Keep the two apart when reading the literature.

反应Reactions

Δm = Σm(反应物) − Σm(产物)E = Δm·c2Δm = Σm(reactants) − Σm(products); E = Δm·c2

A Δm of 1 u corresponds to 931.5 MeV.

7Li + 1H ⟶ 2 4He:Δm = 7.016004 + 1.007825 − 2×4.002603 = 0.018623 u ⟶ 17.3 MeV
