Molar mass

高中High school
拼音 mó ěr zhì liàng 常见误译 分子量Relative molecular mass(分子量(相对分子质量)没有单位;摩尔质量的单位是 g mol⁻¹,两者数值相同但不是同一个量) (relative molecular mass has no units; molar mass is in g mol⁻¹ — same number, different quantity)

定义Definition

Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance, M = m/n, usually in g mol⁻¹. In g mol⁻¹ it is numerically equal to the relative atomic or molecular mass: M(H₂O) = 18.0 g mol⁻¹.

计算Calculation

Add up the relative atomic masses of the atoms in the formula: M(CaCO₃) = 40.1 + 12.0 + 3 × 16.0 = 100.1 g mol⁻¹. The amount from a mass is n = m/M, so 25.0 g of CaCO₃ is 0.250 mol.

测定Measurement

The molar mass of a gas follows from its density at known temperature and pressure: M = ρRT/p. Volatile liquids can be measured by vapour density. In mass spectrometry the m/z of the molecular ion gives the relative molecular mass directly.
