Hückel's 4n + 2 rule

\[N_\pi = 4n + 2\ \ (n = 0, 1, 2, \ldots)\ \Rightarrow\ \text{芳香性}; \qquad N_\pi = 4n\ \Rightarrow\ \text{反芳香性}\]\[N_\pi = 4n + 2\ \ (n = 0, 1, 2, \ldots)\ \Rightarrow\ \text{aromatic}; \qquad N_\pi = 4n\ \Rightarrow\ \text{antiaromatic}\]
Hückel orbital energies of an N-membered ring
\[E_k = \alpha + 2\beta\cos\frac{2\pi k}{N},\quad k = 0, \pm1, \ldots\]

含义Meaning

A planar, monocyclic, fully conjugated system is especially stable (aromatic) with 4n + 2 π electrons and destabilised (antiaromatic) with 4n.

推导Derivation

    Hückel theory for an N-ring gives \(\alpha + 2\beta\cos(2\pi k/N)\) — the Frost circle.

The lowest level is single (2 electrons); higher levels come in degenerate pairs (4 electrons each).

A closed shell needs 2 + 4n electrons; with 4n the top degenerate pair is half filled — a diradical or distorted.

Benzene: 6 π electrons, delocalisation energy \(2\beta\) relative to three isolated C=C.

Assumptions & limitations

Strictly monocyclic; fused rings need Clar’s rule, NICS, etc.

Requires planarity; strained annulenes (e.g. [10]annulene) may twist and lose aromaticity.

Reversed in the lowest triplet state (Baird’s rule).

例题Worked example

Cyclopentadienide (6π), tropylium (6π), pyridine and furan are aromatic; cyclobutadiene (4π) is antiaromatic.
