1983 年美国职业安全与健康管理局（OSHA）发布《危害通识标准》，要求化学品附带物料安全数据表（MSDS）。2003 年联合国通过 GHS，统一了 SDS 的格式，此后欧盟（CLP 法规）、中国（GB/T 16483、GB 30000 系列）等陆续采用。

In 1983 the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the Hazard Communication Standard, requiring material safety data sheets with chemicals. The United Nations adopted GHS in 2003, harmonising the SDS format, and the EU (CLP Regulation), China (GB/T 16483 and the GB 30000 series) and others then adopted it.

在使用任何不熟悉的化学品之前都应阅读其 SDS，了解危害、所需防护（手套材质、护目镜、通风）和事故处理方法；实验室应把常用化学品的 SDS 放在易于取用的地方。SDS 一般可从试剂供应商网站免费获取。

Read the SDS before using any unfamiliar chemical to learn its hazards, the protection needed (glove material, goggles, ventilation) and what to do in an accident; laboratories should keep SDSs for their common chemicals within easy reach. They are usually free on suppliers' websites.
